When You Pray, Say…, #8
In the gospel of Luke NIV, the model prayer ended with “and lead us not into temptation." But in Matthew 6:13 NIV, it ended saying, ”and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." Jesus had taught all disciples this prayer model with the understanding to use it as a model on which to build our own, personal prayers.
Deliver us from evil refers to the evil one or Satan. The devil is called that in Matthew 13 and 19, in 1John 2:13-14, and 1John 3:12. We should ask Jesus to deliver us from Satan's craftiness, his power (though he has none over Jesus or His Father, but he does over us), his snares, and temptations.
We pray for deliverance from external evil. But when we pray, we should also pray against the evil within us. We should pray against the hell, anger, and the evil spirit that lies within. In the words of David, Psalm 41:10, we should ask the Lord to create in us a clean heart, oh God. And renew a right spirit within us.
